"Custom built" is what original equipment manufacturers (OEM), such as; Titleist, Mizuno, Callaway etc. offer for custom clubs. They take their "off the rack - one size fits all" designs and rebuild them with a limited number of “custom” specifications, such as a different shaft (not fitted), a different shaft length (maybe) and adjust for lie angle.

Let me guess - you are a "half inch over, 2° upright" -  am I close?  That's the "generic" custom fit I often see from most of the OEM "so called" fitters!  You may see an increased grip size, and maybe, just maybe, a decreased grip size.  Many of them do not realize that one shaft company's stiff flex will feel like another company's X flex, because there is no standard in the shaft industry.

What they do "NOT" do are things that have been previously discussed in the 'clubfitting' page of this website; precise measurement and alignment of the shaft spine for maximum performance and consistency, nor do they frequency match shafts to exact flex frequencies.  Forget about moment of inertia, MOI matching.  Do they maintain consistent distance gaps between clubs or do they align the shafts in the perfect Flat Line Oscillation position?  I think not!  There are close to thirty different items that I measure before I even mix epoxy!
  Your clubs are built one at a time, not on an assembly line.

The big chain store fitting processes are rarely as thorough and exacting as a fitting from a professional clubfitter like myself.  Some may utilize impact tape, maybe test for good swingweight feel, maybe!  Some may even make set make-up suggestions.  Rather rare actually, unless they are getting a bonus for "pushing" a certain club or line of clubs that week.  Remember, these guys are clerks, at best, getting paid near minimum wage + (perhaps) commission for pushing certain products or a higher price to get a better paycheck.

Big chain stores will cap their "fitters" to about 30 minutes to sell a club and still charge you about $80 bucks for doing something that they don't   understand.  There is no way I can get the required information to properly fit you in 30 minutes, not even close!

All of the proper fitting techniques are an "everyday business norm" here at Link to the Links Professional Clubfitting, something you can always expect.

Following are some examples of vendors I use who give you the best possible golf clubs that you can buy;

One of the most successful OED designers is Tom Wishon.   Since 1987, Tom Wishon has been recognized as one of the leading designers of clubheads in the world. His clubhead designs have represented over 50 different industry design firsts, including the first heel weighted/draw biased metal wood, the first metal wood to exceed 350cc volume, the first metal woods with “cup-face” construction, and the first metal woods designed with a draw bias internal weighting.

Toms clubhead designs are particularly well known for the use of cutting edge materials formed by innovative production techniques, often combining different methods of manufacture on the same model. TWGT clubheads are manufactured to the tightest tolerances in the world, in large part because Tom has taught the foundries’ QC managers precisely how to measure all specifications on clubheads. In total, Tom has designed more than 200 different, original clubhead models which have accounted for more than 10 million golf clubs built for golfers, both amateurs and professionals alike.

Alpha Golf makes the “best golf driver you’ve never heard of” according to Golf Digest. Alpha golf clubs have won an unprecedented 6 Remax World Long Drive Championships, and hundreds of regional long drive tournaments in 2007. Numerous golf reviews have praised Alpha golf clubs, including the PGA which named Alpha as The Best New Driver at the annual PGA Show in Orlando, Fl.

KBS Tour steel shafts start early in 2010 taking both the winner and runner-up positions at The Sony Open in Hawaii. The KBS Tour shaft made its debut in 2008 and carried in the bags of a growing number of today’s top-tiered players in golf’s world rankings.

These are just a few examples.  You won't read about these feats of
success in the Golf Magazines.  Why would those magazines promote lines of equipment that cannot afford, and do not advertise with them with their $200,000 magazine ads?  Who do you think pays for those ads?  Those costs get passed on to you of course!

Only after analyzing all of the data, and researching the various shaft and head combinations will I build the clubs to the correct specifications for your swing.

You have input on your clubs, they are yours.  However, if you request I do something that I absolutely know will not work for you, I will walk away from the business.  Furthermore, if (after the final fitting) you find that the clubs "just don't quite feel right", I will do everything in my power to make the corrections to make your clubs right.  My name and reputation go into your clubs.  I will not risk it!
